Course synopsis
This unique course is the only Level 2 course available in the world that teaches you the essential skills of biomechanical screening alongside a Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) accredited fitness instructor qualification. Candidates will train to a professionally competent level, enabling them to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment. You will be provided with a unique series of screens (tests) and exercises that enable you to ensure a high degree of safety and effective exercise prescription. The course trains you as a Level 2 Fitness Instructor (Gym) as well as a Biomechanics Coach Level 1, and carries a total of 32 REPs points.
The Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) is a vocationally related qualification (VRQ), at level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework. It is also provides access onto the REPs at level 2.
Entry Requirements
Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion, and individual participation is essential; a degree of physical fitness is therefore necessary. As there is an element of communication involved (discussing, presenting, reading and writing), candidates should have basic skills in such communication.
Description
The course is classroom and distance learning based. You will be required to attend 3 days of study (either a Saturday or Sunday) over a 2-3 month period. The distance learning element involves the completion of a workbook and online assessments.
You will be given an introduction into fitness programme design, covering resistance training, cardiovascular training, and essential screening techniques to test your clients’ biomechanics. You will also learn about the various body systems and the effects of exercise upon them.

Assessment
You will undergo a practical and theoretical assessment (see below), as well as being assessed on a portfolio of evidence submitted by you, which will contain the following:
Screening documentation for a client (biomechanics and health related)
Risk assessment for the planned session
Health and Safety Worksheet
Session Plan designed for client specific needs
Session Evaluation
Practical Assessment
This consists of:
A biomechanical screening practical demonstration
An observation of instructing your client through the fitness programme
A demonstration of choosing the correct exercises for your client based on your biomechanical screen
Theory Assessment
This will consist of:
An online classroom assessment
A multiple choice theory paper
